10am (duration 2 hours)

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LT

The English novel really comes into its own in C18 and we know that Jane Austen was an avid reader. In her books, her audience would have recognised references to Fanny Burney, William Cowper and the more sensationalist Gothic novels with vulnerable heroines and supernatural and uncanny happenings. Come along with Bath Parade Guides to find out more about who Jane was reading, what this tells us about her view of contemporary issues, and why when in Northanger Abbey John Thorpe says his favourite book was The Monk would Jane’s readers have experienced a shiver of foreboding.
