Amanda Vickery at the Jane Austen Festival

 Martin Salter, our very own meeter and greeter at the Jane Austen Centre, may be acknowledged as the ‘Most Photographed Man inEngland’, but even he was thrilled when he saw himself in the Christmas edition of the Radio Times.  The photograph is being used to publicise the forthcoming television programme ‘The Many Lovers of Jane Austen’, being transmitted on Friday 23rd December on BBC 2, and in the picture, a costumed Martin stands alongside the presenter, Professor Amanda Vickery. The programme has been made to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s first novel, Sense and Sensibility, and in the 60 minute broadcast, Professor Vickery, one of the leading chroniclers of Georgian England, explores the ebb and flow of Austen’s popularity and the hold her fiction has on us now. 

For the programme, the BBC filmed at the Grand Regency Promenade and Country Fayre during this year's Jane Austen Festival, back in September, and among those interviewed were Martin and Festival Director, Jackie Herring.  On finding out about his appearance in the Radio Times, Martin said: "What an achievement and I am pleased to be representing the Jane Austen Centre and the City of Bath in such a well-known magazine."  Since the magazine hit the newsstands, people have been asking Martin to sign their own copies and, like the true gentleman he is, he has been only more than happy to oblige.
