Friday 23rd August

Here in the Festival office we are dealing with some last minute event plans and tweaks; we are sad to announce that Caroline Jane Knight and Christian Brighty will both no longer be appearing at the 2024 Jane Austen Festival.

So, we are pleased to announce that we have secured long-time friend of the Festival Dr. Amy Frost to lead us through “That’s not Pemberley… But does it matter?” on Wednesday 18th September at 11:30.

That’s not Pemberley…but does it matter?

Wednesday 18th September
11:30 (duration 1 hour)
Venue: The Mission Theatre, 32 Corn Street, BA1 1UF
Tickets £13

We all sigh watching Jane Austen adaptations when scenes set in Bath have clearly been filmed in Dublin or Rosings doesn’t quite match what we imagine it to be. Join Dr Amy Frost in an exploration of the inaccuracies of buildings and locations in Austen adaptations and for a lively discussion about if it really matters when they get it ‘wrong’.

We at the Jane Austen Festival are hopelessly heartbroken that Lord Christian Brighty had to cancel last minute for the 2024 Jane Austen Festival. But, he didn’t leave us sobbing into our lace hankies… he introduced us to another member of his esteemed ton, Rosalie Minnitt, who will bringing her sell-out success Clementine to the Festival!

Clementine

Thursday 19th September
21:00 (duration 1 hour)
Venue: The Mission Theatre, 32 Corn Street, BA1 1UF
Tickets £17

Lady Clementine has until her 27th birthday to find the one. When her latest beau goes missing, she embarks on a hilariously unhinged quest to solve the mystery of her ill fortune. But with neither sense nor sensibility, will our romantic heroine find love in time?@rosalieminnitt

Just like Christian Brighty’s show, this is not viewers of a delicate disposition!
This performance is only suitable for viewers aged 18+ as it may contain scenes of a sexual nature and language. The Jane Austen Festival takes no responsibility for anyone swooning for lack of smelling salts; you have been warned!

Don't worry, events with tickets still available will have on-the-door sales (cash or card) from our lovely Festival stewarding team. You will be able to purchase tickets on-the-door from a minimum of ten minutes before each event start time.

‘Here I am once more in this scene of Dissipation & Vice, and I begin already to find my morals corrupted.’
Letter from Jane Austen aged 20 to her sister Cassandra.

Actor and writer Angela Barlow uncovers Jane’s changing experience of the wicked capital through twenty years, both in her novels and in her life. Was London a ‘scene of Dissipation and Vice’, a place of ‘Domestic Happiness’, or did the city open up her vision, giving her a new freedom and the gift of a deeper companionship with her brother Henry?

Many images illustrate Angela’s theme, and she includes entertaining extracts from the novels and letters, keeping Jane Austen’s voice in our minds throughout. This talk will also include Q&A time about the Jane Austen Society.

Monday 1st July

2024 Festival daily fashion themes

Every year, photos of Festival-goers resplendent in their Regency finest go viral around the world, and the costumes people parade around beautiful Bath are a huge part of making the Festival the success that it is.

For 2024, we are sharing our costume themes for each day with you nice and early, so that any eager beavers wishing to sew new things have a good amount of sewing time.

Remember- the themes are just for fun!

We’re not going to get Lady Catherine-esque about the placement of gowns. You can join in with them as much or as little as you like, and the themes are chosen carefully so they can be flexible; you can achieve them with a whole new outfit or the judicious application of a ribbon, feather or new button!

Friday 23rd February 2024

We have news of the most exciting sort! Like an excitable younger Bennet sister, we know you are all terribly fond of dancing and eager for us to name the day of our next ball. So, we are very happy to announce that we will be welcoming guests to balls on both weekends of the Festival.

The Natural Theatre Company will be gracing us with their hilarious theatrical walking tour Lost & Found on Saturday 14th, Sunday 15th and Saturday 21st September. We know lots more Austen fans join us for the second weekend of the Festival, and we wanted them to enjoy the hilarity as well!

Furthermore, we know that the Festival Fayre can get a little muslin-crushingly busy (with a lack of Mr Tilneys to help out), so for 2024 we will be opening the Festival Fayre on the first Friday as well as the first Saturday. This should give anyone around in Bath on the afternoon of Friday 13th the chance to grab any last minute additions to their Promenading finery before Saturday.
