  darcy3
Just in time for the holidays,  of Kids' Book Review looks at this delightful children's series which is sure to melt your heart.
mr darcy - fieldMr Darcy is a reserved and gentle duck, living quietly in the beautiful Pemberley Park. Despite his wonderful home, he feels lonely but he is too shy to accept the invitation from Lizzy and her sisters to attend Sunday afternoon tea. Sound familiar? The author, Alex Field, adores Jane Austen and created her character of Mr Darcy to reflect Austen’s original from Pride and Prejudice – a little shy and a proper English gentleman. Bingley, Caroline, Maria, Lizzy and Lizzy's four sisters fill out the Austen-inspired character list. Mr Darcy is a sweet story about shyness and the encouragement and enjoyment that can be found in friendships. Accompanied by gorgeous Peter Carnavas illustrations, the story is gently told with the stubborn Mr Darcy no doubt delighting children and amusing parents who are familiar with the ‘real’ Mr Darcy.

darcyIn the sequel, Mr. Darcy the Dancing Duck, Mr Darcy the duck is back  in this adorable tale in celebration of 200 years of Pride and Prejudice. It's dancing season and all the animals are in full flight. Maria the mouse is skipping along the path, Bingley the horse is trotting through the field and Caroline the cow is waltzing in the pasture. In Pemberley Park, Lizzy the duck and her sisters are dancing around a maypole, but Mr Darcy, despite his firm good looks, is not a dancer. As Lizzy runs up and asks him to dance, Mr Darcy most reluctantly and politely declines. He's no dancer. All he does is fall on his backside. Can his friends help him with his two left feet? Author Field, a self-confessed Jane Austen fan, brings to life a little slice of the magic that is Pride and Prejudice in Mr Darcy the Dancing Duck. Award-winning illustrator (and author) Peter Carnavas once again brings charm and childlike warmth to Mr Darcy's bucolic world, making for a sweet and rhythmic story that will delight kids - and no doubt send them into a maypole spin.

mr-darcy-and-the-christmas-puddingIt's Christmas at Pemberley Pond, and Mr Darcy the Duck is back in this gorgeous festive tale and the importance of opening our hearts to all during this special time of year. Our dapper young duck is prepping his house for Christmas. Securing mistletoe to his front door, he spies Mr Collins the Cat taking far too much interest in Maria the Mouse. Rescuing his young friend, he takes her inside the house. Caroline the cow, Bingley the horse and Lizzy Duck and her sisters soon arrive. It's time for that classic British tradition--Stir-Up Sunday--when families come together to prep the Christmas pudding. As the friends get busy with mixing the pudding, Mr Collins appears at the window. He looks cold and miserable but Mr Darcy simply closes the curtains. He doesn't trust that sly old cat. Lizzy, being her sweet self, soon helps thaw Mr Darcy's heart, and Mr Collins is allowed in to help. On Christmas Day, the friends return to share their very special pudding, made with love. Featuring Peter Carnavas's typically charming illustrations, this is a sweet story with a super cute ending. An addendum page about Stir-Up Sunday is a wonderful way to introduce Australian kids to the traditions of other places.
