It's been a stunner of a year for Jane Austen TV and movie news. We've already covered two new adaptations - the BBC's new adaptation of Janice Hadlow's
The Other Bennet Sister and Netflix's new adaptation of
Pride and Prejudice. Just when we thought that we might have had our fill of announcements, Daisy Edgar-Jones announced that she would be starring in a new adaptation of
Sense and Sensibility.
The 1995 Sense and Sensibility is ranked not only amongst the best Jane Austen adaptations of all time, but amongst the best movies of all time, full stop. Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet were so good as the Dashwood sisters that they've imprinted themselves quite thoroughly on the cultural conscience. They are the Dashwoods. This adaptation has a lot to live up to!
Now that we've got a full cast list, let's look at who will be playing who.
Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood
Starting with the one we already knew about - Daisy Edgar-Jones will be stepping into the role of the sensible older Dashwood, Elinor. Edgar-Jones first stepped into the limelight as Marianne in the 2020 adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People. Since then, she's gone on to star in Where The Crawdads Sing and Twisters. Though she's yet to start raking in the awards, she's got a few nominations under her belt, as well as a strong record with book adaptations.
Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood
The emotional 'sense' of the title, Marianne Dashwood, will be played by Esmé Creed-Miles. Though not quite as high profile as Daisy Edgar-Jones, Creed-Miles has a solid bundle of credits behind her, including the titular role in the TV show Hanna. She's also a musician, performing with her band, Cusk.
George McKay as Edward Ferrars
Our Edward Ferrars is the talented George McKay. McKay first impressed me with his ability to not only speak, but sing, in a persuasive Scottish accent - no mean feat - in Sunshine on Leith (you might also remember a very small McKay in 2003's Peter Pan). Since then, he has had roles in a wide range of movies, including 1917, and is something of an indie darling, always picking interesting roles. But will he make a good Mr Ferrars?
Frank Dillane as John Willoughby
If Frank Dillane's cheeky face is provoking a niggle of familiarity in your brain, it's because he played a young Tom Riddle in 2009's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. You may also recognise him for his work on Fear the Walking Dead, or as a recurring character on The Essex Serpent. It feels like his career is just getting started - he definitely has the rakish good looks to play Marianne's first beau.
Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon
It could be tricky to get the honourable Colonel Brandon's casting right - Marianne sees him as an old bachelor, and it's important to convey his maturity (it's part of the appeal). However, making too much of it might make the modern audience quite uncomfortable. Is Norwegian actor Herbert Nordrum the right balance? Well, it's tricky to find out much about him. Nordrum starred as the love interest in the Academy Award-nominated Worst Person in the World and has mostly taken Norwegian language roles until now. How will he do as Brandon? We'll have to wait and see.
Caitríona Balfe as Mrs Dashwood
Irish actress Caitríona Balfe will be joining the cast as the Dashwood's mother. Outlander fans will be more than familiar with the show's leading actress, and you may have seen her in movies such as Super 8, Belfast, and Now You See Me.
