Grand Regency Costumed Promenade

The official opening of the Jane Austen Festival starts with a spectacular Grand Regency Costumed Promenade through the centre of Bath. Led by our own town crier, stroll through this beautiful city for approximately 1 hour.
To take part you must purchase a wristband and be in Regency attire. This is a Regency costume mandatory event. If you arrive without a suitable Regency outfit you may be asked to leave the promenade as it spoils the "Georgian Bath" illusion we are creating with this event.

By purchasing a wristband you are contributing towards the costs of road closures, traffic control, Renteq road stewards and the safety marshals who keep everyone promenading safely, away from those new fangled horseless carriages. Our 2025 Promenaders (and those of the future) thank you greatly for supporting the Festival and this magnificent opening event.

More information about the 2025 Promenade:

Regency Costume

The Grand Regency Costumed Promenade is a Regency costume mandatory event.
There are no changing facilities at either end of the Promenade route, if you arrive for the promenade not in suitable Regency costume you will be refused participation with no refund offered.

Promenading with a weapon

Weapons
If you are planning on wearing a weapon (any form of blade or gun) as part of your Regency outfit, please be aware this will entail some new administrative safety police checks for the 2025 Promenade:

  • You must give your full contact details when booking for each person wearing a weapon during the Promenade.
  • There will be an Armorer whose role it is to check and mark safe every weapon (blade or gun) within the promenade. This will entail reporting to a specific point on Saturday morning before the Promenade begins to have your weapon checked and labelled. If this is not adhered to, you risk having your weapon seized by the police. Any bladed item which is deemed sharp will not be permitted within the promenade and may be confiscated by the police.
  • Further details relating to the wearing of weapons will be issued closer to the Promenade date.
  • *It is worth noting that weapons are not permitted inside either the Festival Fayre or the Guildhall and you will be asked to go away and remove them before entering either of those premises. The Jane Austen Festival also take no responsibility for other businesses around Bath implementing the same rule, so it is at your own risk that you may be denied entry if wearing a weapon.
Accessibility
  • The entire Jane Austen Festival Promenade route is step free, however the pavement and roads are (like a lot of Bath) not always smooth or level. You will be required to mount sloped curbs, and navigate cobbled streets.
  • The gathering point of the Royal Crescent Lawn is accessible via a small step, therefore if you are unable to manoeuvre this, you will be asked to gather on the pavement opposite. Persons with mobility equipment may also be asked to gather on the pavement to avoid damage to the lawn.
  • The promenade lasts for approximately 1 hour of walking, but there will be the option to join part way through if you would prefer.
  • We are unable to offer careers tickets for Promenade wristbands.
  • *To hear more information about these options closer to the event date and to let the Promenade team know, please check the accessibility support box when booking.
Dogs

Dogs are very welcome to accompany their wristband wearing, regency outfitted owners on the Promenade.

  • Please be aware dogs are not allowed onto the private Royal Crescent lawn, or into Parade Gardens.
  • Assistance dogs are permitted into Parade Gardens, but as a private lawn, they are NOT permitted onto the Royal Crescent Lawn, you will have to remain outside this area with your pooch and gather on the pavement to opposite.
