Jane Austen: Volume the First

Here's all the Jane Austen news and updates you might have missed in March!

Fans are recommending adaptations to sate your Other Bennet Girl thirst

Now that The Other Bennet Girl is over, Jane Austen fans are looking for their next hit of Regency fun. Are they recommending the 2005 Pride and Prejudice? Or Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility? No, the BBC adaptation of Emma is enjoying a day in the sun. Starring Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller, this Emma adaptation is finally getting its flowers, with some even calling it a 'masterpiece.'

Haven't seen The Other Bennet Girl yet? Here's why you should

If you haven't managed to get around to watching this season's hit Austen-adjacent show, now's the time! Jane Austen's story finds new life in Graphic Novel adaptations

Graphic novels are having a huge moment. In a world where we are reading left, right, and centre about the reading crisis, they offer an accessible way back into reading, and are, of course, a fabulous storytelling medium all of their own. In this article, Alex Fitch and Louise Curran look at two recent graphic biographies of Jane Austen, Patchwork by Kate Evans and The Novel Life of Jane Austen by Isabel Greenberg and Janine Barchas. Despite their similar formats, they offer two differing approaches to Austen's life and work.

Ever wanted a house straight out of an Austen novel?

Yeah, me too. Thankfully, Country and Town House magazine is here to help. They are looking at all of the recent adaptations of Jane Austen's work (including, despite it all, the most recent Persuasion) to understand how filmmakers make Jane Austen's world come to life through sets. In this article, Charlie Colville and Emilia Gould explore Austen's world in film, showing how there isn't just one way to dress these stories.

See yourself reflected in Austen's world - literally - at this exhibition

Ceramicist Claire Twomey has brought a new exhibit to Jane Austen's House, with a reflective twist. Sixty mirrors have been installed throughout the house, each with a quote from Pride and Prejudice engraved in the glass. She hopes to encourage reflection about how making pilgrimages to places like Jane Austen's House in Chawton are just as much about our own identities as they are about learning more about the author herself. The installation is in place until November.

Chance to see The Other Bennet Sister costumes in real life

Dyffryn Gardens has just opened up an exciting new exhibit. The stately home, which is outside of Cardiff in Wales, will be welcoming visitors who would like to catch a glimpse of the costumes from the recent BBC hit, The Other Bennet Sister. What better way to keep the fun going now that the show has finished? Visitors arriving sooner rather than later can also enjoy the pastel delights of wisteria, which festoons the building like lilac bunting!

We've been waiting to hear more about the upcoming Sense and Sensibility movie as we always do - with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Though we have to wait until October to see the whole thing, we're starting to hear twitterings of trailers. Though not yet available online, a short trailer was screened at CinemaCon, offering conventiongoers a first look at Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters. Hopefully, the rest of us will get our chance to see it soon!
