A Novel Experience - walking tour

10:00 - Tuesday 15th September 2026

(duration 2 hours)

The English novel really comes into its own in C18th and we know that Jane Austen was an avid reader. In her books, her audience would have recognised references to Fanny Burney, William Cowper and the more sensationalist Gothic novels with vulnerable heroines and supernatural, uncanny happenings. Come along with Bath Parade Guides to find out more about who Austen was reading, what this tells us about her view of contemporary issues, and why, when Northanger Abbey's John Thorpe says his favourite book was The Monk, Austen's readers would have experienced a shiver of foreboding.

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY

Along the way we will be able to spot some of the locations used in the filming of the various Persuasion adaptations, including the famous Gravel Walk.
