Meet your new Pride and Prejudice stars

Darcy and Elizabeth with question marks over their faces
Unless you've been living under a rock, you have probably heard about the new Pride and Prejudice adaptation in the works at Netflix. With Joe Wright's adaptation turning 20 this year, rumblings and rumours of new adaptations of Jane Austen's most famous work have grown louder as time has gone by. It looks like it's finally happening, with writer Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and director Euros Lyn (Heartstopper) attached to create a six-part series. Of course, every good Jane Austen adaptation hinges on its casting, and we finally have our Elizabeth, Darcy, and Mrs Bennet. Let's meet them:

Emma Corrin VOGUE (July 2022)

Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet

You're most likely to recognise Emma for their work as Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown, which won them a Golden Globe and a Daytime Emmy. They've been booked and busy, starring in Lady Chatterley's Lover, Deadpool and Wolverine and  Nosferatu. The 29-year-old comes to Pride and Prejudice from a string of successes and excellent acting choices. We can expect them to bring sensitive and finely-tuned acting chops to Elizabeth.

Casting that feels so right that you want to kick yourself for not thinking of it yourself. Olivia Colman is a British national treasure and darling of the comedy and serious cinematic worlds. Between her early beloved performance as Sophie in Peep Show and her awards-season-sweeping performance as Queen Anne in The Favourite, Colman has proven herself a multifaceted performer. She seems like the perfect candidate to bring the larger-than-life Mrs Bennet to life. Like Corrin, she's also an alum of The Crown.

Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy

This one has proven the most controversial of the casting announcements so far. Many fans have claimed they were going into this adaptation with open minds, willing to see Mr Darcy portrayed as never before. It turns out there is one thing that crosses a line for many Pride and Prejudice fans, one thing they can't countenance: a blonde.  Yes, the casting of blonde actor Jack Lowden has ruffled some feathers. However, as a Scot, I have to defend this choice of my fellow countryman; after all, if he's good enough for wife Saoirse Ronan, who am I to protest?

In seriousness, Lowden has some solid credits behind him, especially in the period drama arena, with credits including Mary Queen of Scots, War and Peace and Dunkirk. He also has a shelf of awards and nominations, including an Olivier.
As far as the current casting announcements go, it seems that the casting team for this new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice are looking for safe hands -- actors with established chops, shelves of awards, and experience across comedy and drama. Who will we get next? Surely, we'll hear about the Bennet sisters soon, or perhaps the Bingleys!

Are you excited about this adaptation? How do you feel about the casting? Who would you cast in the other roles? Let us know in the comments!
