Jane Austen: The Radical Writer? - walking tour

10:00 - Monday 15th September 2025

We all know what Jane Austen wrote about don’t we? There are 6 novels which are essentially variations of the same plot; where following twists and turns, a few misunderstandings, all comes good in the end and our heroine gets her man. Add some poking fun at society of the day, and essentially, we have a nice bit of romantic comedy. Yet have we misread the books? What if there are far deeper themes highlighting society’s ills and failings.

Come along with Bath Parade Guides to find out about hidden references to slavery, women’s rights, evolution, and other pressing matters of the day.

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY

The Great, The Good, & The Not So Good - walking tour

14:00 - Monday 15th September 2025

In May 1799 Jane came to Bath with her mother, her brother Edward, and his wife. On arriving she wrote to Cassandra ‘There was a very long list of Arrivals here in the Newspaper yesterday. So we may not immediately dread absolute solitude.’ Bath was still the place to be for balls, public breakfasts and strolling on the Parades.

But just who would Jane have met on her days walking about the city? To find out and indulge in a bit of historical gossip, come along with Bath Parade Guides to hear about the Great, the Good, the charlatans and the downright bad who flocked to the city for the hot waters, to gamble and make a good match on the marriage market.

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY

What About the Workers? - walking tour

14:00 - Tuesday 16th September 2025

It is often said that Jane Austen hardly ever mentions the servants in her novels and had little concern with their daily lives. Yet Jane’s original readers would have understood that servants were always there in the background and their role was determined by the income and social status of her characters – just as it was for the Austen family themselves.
In fact, Bath in Jane Austen’s day depended entirely on the entrepreneurial working residents to provide every comfort and commodity for the fashionable visitors, not just domestic servants, but all sorts of workers from ladies maids to lodging house keepers, milliners to market gardeners, sedan chairmen to coalmen.

Our walk will explore what was on offer, as well as the servants and services that the Austen family might themselves have relied upon during their time in Bath, and how Jane reflected this in her novels.

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY

Tickets £13

Kill or Cure? - walking tour

14:00 - Friday 19th September 2025

People came to Bath with a catalogue of illnesses, hoping to mend their broken health. How successful were the cures offered? Were doctors at the time reputable? – or mere quacks? Walk with Bath Parade Guides to hear some of the grisly details of Regency medicine and what Bath could offer.

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY
