Double Celebration - Intermediates Regency dance workshop

10:00 (duration 1hr 30mins)

Venue: Elwin Room, BRLSI, 16-18 Queen Square, BA1 2HN

Celebrate 30 years of two iconic TV Emma productions with the 30 years-old Jane Austen Dancers Regency dance group, covering a selection of the dances from the 1996 adaptations. These English Country Dances were taken from a wider historical timeframe, so may pre-date the Regency/Jane Austen era, but all are still popular today!

This is a fast-paced session not suited to beginners or those new to Regency dancing, due to the complexity of many of the dances. Please wear flat, non-slip shoes, light clothing and bring a drink (essential). No partner necessary. Period costume (no trains) welcome. You will need a good understanding of English to understand the dance calling.

A Novel Experience

10:00 (duration 2 hours)

Meet: Outside the main door of Bath Abbey, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY

The English novel really comes into its own in C18th and we know that Jane Austen was an avid reader. In her books, her audience would have recognised references to Fanny Burney, William Cowper and the more sensationalist Gothic novels with vulnerable heroines and supernatural, uncanny happenings. Come along with Bath Parade Guides to find out more about who Austen was reading, what this tells us about her view of contemporary issues, and why, when Northanger Abbey's John Thorpe says his favourite book was The Monk, Austen's readers would have experienced a shiver of foreboding.

'A prettyish kind of a little wilderness’ - Landscapes and Gardens in the Novels of Jane Austen - talk

12 noon (duration 1 hour)

Venue: Elwin Room, BRLSI, 16-18 Queen Square, BA1 2HN

Timothy Mowl’s lavishly-illustrated talk will consider designed landscapes and gardens in Jane Austen’s novels, not only as representative of current horticultural fads, but as important elements in the plots, providing the background to moments of high emotional drama. Her life spans the demise of Capability Brown’s minimalist landscaping (died 1783), the growth of Picturesque theory in the late 1780s and 1790s, which she satirizes in Northanger Abbey, and the coming of Humphry Repton, who appears in Mansfield Park, with his promotion of Ornamental Gardening. At the heart of the novels and of this talk are the shrubberies, sweet-scented, shadowy places for exercise, contemplation and romantic assignations.
